For the first time, MessageLabs noted that the proportion of phishing attacks in email has now overtaken the threat from virus or Trojan attacks. There are a number of factors that may have contributed to this. First, virus attacks have declined in recent months as they have become more targeted. Attacks are now occurring in smaller waves, such as with Warezov, rather than as one large outbreak. Next, the shift toward deploying two-factor authentication methods could spell an end to the traditional phishing techniques currently being used. This trend is likely to continue through 2007, since most phishing attacks now occur in greater numbers than that of virus outbreaks, especially as the latter become more targeted, in smaller numbers.
