meebo's Growth Booms, Company Announces $9 Million in Venture Cap Funding from Draper Fisher Jurvetson

meebo is a completely web-based tool (free) that allows users to simultaneously access one or more instant messaging services WITHOUT having to download any client software. If you've never used meebo, it's 100% worth a look and also might be something to share in training sessions. We first learned about meebo months ago by Steven Cohen.

The services accessible via meebo are:
+ AOL Instant Messenger
+ Yahoo Messenger
+ Google Talk
+ Windows Live Messenger
+ ICQ
+ Jabber

Registration is NOT required. However, if you do register with meebo, your logins/passwords are saved and you can choose to have your chats saved by meebo.

According to today's announcement, meebo has doubled the number of registered users from 500,000 to 1 million in just one quarter. We also learn that meebo has more than 1.2 million daily logins and exchanges 75 million messages per day with average sessions of 70 minutes.

meebo can be useful in many situations. For example, where you're unable or don't want to download software to a computer. While it's true that you can't get all of the features and IM service offers in its native format, for quick and efficient communication it's excellent.

For the info pro on a reference desk, they could utilize meebo to quickly interact with users, independent of which of the four major IM services they're using.

meebo's simplicity/ease of use makes it a Web 2.0 app that can have people using IM in a matter of minutes.

More about meebo and the funding it has just received here.
