+ Three Major TV Networks in Talks to Form YouTube Rival (via Reuters)
If a service like this were to happen would they allow others to crawl and index the content OR keep the content proprietary/block others from crawling it? Reuters reports on a WSJ story about Viacom/CBS, NBC Universal, and News Corp/Fox discussing creating their own YouTube rival since the beginning of 2006. All three have lots of video/film services in their holdings. Examples? Viacom also owns MTV, iFilm, Comedy Centeral, TVLand, to name just a few of its holdings. News Corp owns MySpace, Fox Searchlight, BskyB, TV Guide, and many other properties that generate film/video content. NBC Universal owns CNBC, MSNBC, USA Network, Telemundo and others. It was about a year ago when Jon Fine wrote in BusinessWeek about content producers becoming search providers. Finally, the headline used here is a bit deceiving. Many YouTube "rivals" are already online. From MetaCafe to Guba. From Yahoo Video Search to Veoh and many many more. Here's a chart that lists 61 video sharing services.
