Some ResourceShelf Favorites: From Art Museum Databases to Digital Globes to Real-Time Information

Resource of the Week: Some Recent ResourceShelf Favorites
by Gary Price, Founding Editor

Shirl in under the weather this week (get well soon!), and I'm not even going to try to match her skill with Resource of the Week. Instead, I'm responding to some readers who have expressed to me their frustration that they often miss posts on ResourceShelf because of the sheer volume of additions (and this past week is no exception).

Here are some highlights of our collection development from the past few months that you may have missed or forgotten about. We think they represent some of the best that's out there.

+ ResourceShelf has been compiling three sets of links to specialty databases from art museums over the past few months. Here are the links:
1 ||| 2 ||| 3

+ Virtually Fly Around the Globe in 3D With SkylineGlobe (Beta); Developers API Also Available
A small plug-in allows you to virtually fly around the world. However, this early beta release only contains mapping for the U.S. Lots more to come. Nevertheless, plenty of cool "extras" in this early beta including an option to add-in live traffic cameras for the D.C. metro region right on to the aerial images. Btw, the cameras are aggregated by TrafficLand.com (http://www.trafficland.com) for many cities, so expect to see more in future releases of SkylineGlobe.

+ As you’ll see when you review this week’s postings, the mobile web continues to expand and expand quickly. These three posts offer direct links to mainstream news web sites optimized for mobile users and also a selection of a few of our favorite mobile resources.

+ Finally, two areas that we hope to expand moving forward. First, our collection of real-time databases. It’s amazing to see what’s out there. Second, our frequent posts of recently recorded webcasts often taking place at universities or other civic organizations. Great content that can often be hard to find. We now have categories for both types of content.

+ Webcasts and Lectures

+ Real-Time Information

NOTE: Resource of the Week will return on Thursday, November 30, 2006. Next Thursday is the Thanksgiving Day holiday in the U.S. Btw, speaking of Thanksgiving, it's going to cost a bit more this year.
