Info Industry--Thomson "Thomson Expands InfoTrac College Edition"
From the announcement, "The Thomson Corporation announced today it will provide faculty and students using textbooks from Wadsworth, Brooks/Cole, Duxbury, Heinle, Schirmer and South-Western with access to 10 million full-text, online articles to support research and classroom learning. InfoTrac College Edition, an online periodical library, contains 3,800 full-text journals, packaged exclusively with Thomson textbooks. Adoption of college texts from these publishers includes a free passcode, providing 24/7 access to full-text online articles for four months." The new version of InfoTrac College Edition sees an increase of 400% more material from full-text journals. Comment: The bundling of database access with textbooks is not new and can be a tremendous tool. However, what about the duplication of resources, wasted energy of librarians, and financial issues for the students/faculty who already have access to these sources from their university library or local public library? Why do I need to consider other/additional library resources? All I need to do is open my textbook, get the "passcode" and start searching. Another question, are textbook costs rising to subsidize access to databases that are already available from the library?
