Web Resource of the Week
Trade Associations, Scholarly/Professional Societies--Directories

I've prepared a short list of "open-web" resources to assist in locating these types of groups.
-
Scholarly Societies on the Web
Organizations from around the World
-
AssociationCentral.Com (U.S.)
Another database of U.S. associations
Associations on the Net
From the Internet Public Library
Gateway To Associations (U.S.)
Over 6500 associations located in the U.S.. Database is a service of the American Society of Association Executives
Government and Business Associations Directory (Australia)
Compiled by Business Entry Point (BEP). A service of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources.
International Organization Web Sites
Over 3500 entries compiled by the Union of International Associations. Entries were selected from the Yearbook of International Organizations
International Trade Associations in North America, Directory of
From the Federation of International Trade Associations
National Trade Associations (Canada)
From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade
Trade Association Forum Directory (U.K)
U.K. based trade associations, guilds or federations
Trade Associations in Canada (via Strategis)
A single page compilation is not available. However, many of the "Business Information by Industrial Category" entries contain links to associations.

Resources, Tools, and Full-Text Documents
Manufacturers--Directories
Source: Consumers Union of U.S
Directory of Major Manufacturers (Consumer Products)
Perfect for your ready reference shelf/folder/bookmark list! The directory features telephone numbers (many toll-free) and web addresses of leading manufacturers (by market share) for hundreds of consumer products.

Librarians
Source: The Oregonian
"Old Principles Guide Librarians on Net"
Meet Ginnie Cooper, director of the Multnomah County Library and Candace Morgan, associate director of Fort Vancouver Regional Library. From the article, "The role for a librarian grows more important," said Cooper, whose library joined the legal challenge in February 2001, after being approached by the local American Civil Liberties Union chapter. The ACLU suit was later combined with Morgan's American Library Association suit. "Because of all those resources, we are really bombarded with data, and part of the special skill of a librarian is to make sense of all that data and make sure you get a Web site that will provide you with information that is reliable," Cooper said.

Web Search
Source: NY Times
"Upstart Search Engines Try to Topple Google"
A short piece by Lisa Guernsey on Teoma, AV, and WiseNut. One engine that isn't mentioned in the article but continues to grow and become more useful is AllTheWeb. Management continues to tell us that searchable access to full-text .pdf material is on the way. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Finally, AllTheWeb's underlying technology from FAST Search and Transfer will soon power the FirstGov.Gov engine.
