Semantic Web
Source: San Jose Mercury News
"Machines to Talk Intelligently on Web"
Dan Gillmor provides an overview to the Semantic Web. From the article, "You tell a search engine you're looking for a story on the gadget and want the contact information for anyone quoted in the article. This time, several computers communicate with each other and then present you with a list of names and numbers. You can't do the latter, yet. But technologists are working on what may be a key piece of the next generation of networks -- a ``Semantic Web'' where machines talk intelligently with other machines to solve all kinds of problems for you and me."

Web Use--Research

"Exploration of World Wide Web Tilts From Eclectic to Mundane"
From the article, "Last year, about 60 percent of Internet users visited more than 20 Web sites in a typical month, according to Jupiter Media Metrix (news/quote), a research firm that measures traffic online; this year the proportion is close to half. The number of people using search engines as a starting point has also decreased significantly, a reflection of the more direct, predetermined approach to the Web....What is lost, some say, is the experience of serendipity and the delight in finding things that you would not naturally seek out.
